How to Install WordPress Plugins from the official Website

What Do You Need?

Before you begin with the tutorial, make sure you have the following:

Access to the desktop administrator of a WordPress plugin downloaded on your computer (option 2) or Access via an FTP client (Option 3)

Option 1 – Install WordPress plugins from the official directory

This is the number one choice because it is the most popular, safe and fast. The official directory of has more than 50.000 plugins that are waiting to be useful at some point.

Today, it is not necessary to login to the WordPress page and download the plugin (option 2), because now you can install plugins directly from your WordPress, and then we’ll show you how to do it.

Access the WordPress administrator desktop and go to the section of Plugins.
Select the option Add new inside the section (as seen in the image above).

Within the page to add you must select the button that says Upload Plugin, which can be found at the top of the page.

You can navigate between the different plugins using the Filters featured, popular, Recommended and favorite, which you can see at the top of the available plugins. Either way, the best thing to do is to use the search field that says “Search Plugins…” and write the name of the plugin you want to install.

When you have found the plugin you want (in this case we will install the plugin BuddyPress) you only have to click the button that says Install Now.

The plugin that has just been installed are left off, but the only thing you have to do is click the Activate button that will appear where said Install Now.

Option 2 – Install WordPress plugins manually

Go to the section of Plugins and select Add New.

Option 3 – Use an FTP client to install WordPress Plugins to

use an FTP client is another quick way to upload a plugin to your WordPress, although it continues to be the most time consuming, although this is an excellent way to upload larger files, since in many cases the php.ini file of the hosting provider does not allow us to upload plugins or themes using WordPress.

Follow these steps to install a plugin using an FTP client:

  2. Connect the FTP client with your hosting. Search the directory to which you

  4. Now go to the folder wp-content.
  5. Open the plugins folder.
  6. Upload the folder Removed (without the plugin .zip).
  7. Go to your desktop administrator of WordPress.
  8. Go to the section of Plugins and select plugins installed.
  9. Find the plugin you just upload and select the Enable option that appears under the name of the plugin.
  10. Ready, now your plugin is enabled and running.


Either of these methods works perfectly, so you shouldn’t have any problem.
